Goldenseal grows naturally under a high canopy of hardwood forest, primarily in the Ohio River Valley. Herbalists, growers and consumers alike are aware of the threat to Goldenseal due to degradation of habitat and over-harvest of this valued medicinal.

Organic cultivation is encouraged. Goldenseal can be woods-cultivated, or grown in an open field under shade cloth.
